This summer, students grades 8-12 will have the opportunity to join three members of the San Domenico Science faculty on a 10-day ecology program in Haines, Alaska. The main goal of the course is to foster students’ awareness of complex relationships that exist throughout the natural world and how they interact to have economic, social, cultural, and philosophical implications, while giving them the time and opportunity to consider their own relationship with nature. Mornings will be spent receiving classroom instruction on topics ranging from glaciation to forest ecology, and in the afternoons students will journey into the wild nature surrounding Haines to explore and apply what they have learned. Explorations will include hiking and kayaking, as well as an overnight river rafting trip led by professional river guides. In addition, there will be an emphasis on personal reflection and connection to nature, and students will be invited to participate in a variety of mindfulness practices and community sharing.
Aside from one night camping on the river, students will be lodged in camp cabins, and will have a private chef to prepare meals. Cell and wifi service will be minimal, giving students a wonderful chance to unplug, but a landline will be available in camp headquarters in case of emergency. Dr. Adrianna Smyth (San Domenico Upper School Science Teacher), one of the trip leaders, is currently conducting research into immersive science education, and will be asking participants to complete research questionnaires before and after the trip. More information, along with parental consent forms, will be provided as we prepare for the journey.
