All School SD for Literacy! Week

March 2-6, 2020

SD For Literacy Week Table Setup

Students during SD For Literacy Week

Join us next week in support of literacy equity in Marin! San Domenico will be hosting a series of coordinated events both on campus and off, to connect with our community, and provide books and funds for our fellow Marin students at Hamilton School in Novato. On-campus events will include educational assemblies for our students, fun literacy-centered events, and a K-12 book drive for the Global Book Exchange, a non-profit in Terra Linda that collects and distributes books to those in our community with limited access to resources. SD for Literacy week will culminate in the 2nd Annual SD for Literacy All School celebration at Book Passage in Corte Madera, on Thursday, March 5, 5:30-8:30 pm. Note this date on your calendar, bring the kids for dinner on us, and shop SD’s Book Fair at Book Passage, while supporting an excellent cause!

Here is what’s happening...and when:

“Education Inequity in Marin” assembly presentations

SD Senior Isabella Engler has created school-level appropriate presentations for our students around the issue of the education gap in Marin, and has been presenting during assemblies in these weeks leading up to SD for Literacy week. Isabella is doing her senior ROSE Project on this topic, working with Hamilton School, and is a leader in the SD for Literacy! Week efforts.

SD for Literacy! Book Drive
Monday-Friday, March 2-6

Bring in your gently used books for donation to an excellent cause! Not only will these books be distributed to those who might otherwise not have access, but giving your books a second life also reduces waste! Book collecting bins will be located at both green awnings for easy access. Please send books in paper or reusable grocery bags, or (more ideally!) small boxes for easy transport.

SD in the community:
8th Grade “Hamilton Storytellers” Capstone Group and Hamilton 3rd Graders

8:00 am to 12:00 pm
The Global Book Exchange, San Rafael

Our Eighth grade “Hamilton Storytellers” Capstone Group will meet the Third Grade class from Hamilton School at the Global Book Exchange where they will work together to sort our book drive donations, and our Eighth Graders will help the younger students find and collect books that interest and engage them. Each Third Grader will be given an “SD for Literacy” bag to fill with books of his or her choice. The students will also share snacks and have time to read together.

K-12 Pajama Day and BRUNCH FOR LUNCH!
Wednesday, March 4

Everyone should wear their comfiest pajamas for the All School Pajama Day! Brunch for lunch in the cafeteria! Bring your favorite book from home for additional special reading time on this day.

Our high school students will also assist the sixth graders with navigating the huge range of choices at GBX, and each Hamilton student will be given an SD for Literacy bag to fill with books of his or her choice to take home. All students will share a snack and have the chance to get to know each other!

K-12 SD for Literacy! Celebration and Book Fair at Book Passage
Thursday, March 5
5:30 to 8:30 pm
Book Passage in Corte Madera
Dinner, Dessert, and Music

Dine on pizza and salads from Moseley’s, ice cream donated by Three Twins, and enjoy performances by our Upper School Virtuoso Program and other student performance groups! On this night, and all week March 2-6, Book Passage will donate 20% of ALL San Domenico purchases to Hamilton School for their classroom libraries. Don't forget to look for our SD Giving Trees by the registers, where you can purchase a tag to buy a book for the Hamilton School library!
