Dominican Sisters Conference Public Statement
A Response to Gun Violence on Our School Campuses
The Dominican Sisters Conference (which unites 19 congregations of Dominican Sisters in the U.S.) joins its voice with all who stand against the rampant gun violence in our country, especially as it has been occurring in our schools. Our hearts and our prayers are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones in Florida, as we lift our voices to our government for the creation and enforcement of sensible and comprehensive gun control. Moreover we ask for policies that will provide for the needs of those who suffer from emotional, psychological, and mental challenges.
Here we have to ask ourselves: Why are deadly weapons being sold to those who plan to inflict untold suffering on individuals and society? Sadly, the answer, as we all know, is simply for money: money that is drenched in blood, often innocent blood. In the face of this shameful and culpable silence, it is our duty to confront the problem and to stop the arms trade.
