Use Media to Make Sure Black History Is More Than a Month
February is Black History Month. To facilitate the ongoing discussions around general history and how different groups of people fit into it -- from those groups' perspectives -- you can use media made to amplify the voices that have historically been diminished.
All kids need role models, past and present, so share the stories of some of these impressive people to inspire them. And no matter your kid's age, there are books you can all enjoy as your learn. When you want to explore racism head-on, you can co-view one of these movies to start the discussion. Whether this media serves as a mirror or window for your kid, it can serve as one small step in an ongoing discussion.
