Dear SD Boarding Families,

With our international students an important part of our San Domenico community, we are keeping a close eye on the spread of the coronavirus 2019-nCoV and how it may impact our families around the world. In the past week, several of our families from Asia have contacted us asking if their children can stay in the dorms during the upcoming 17-21 February break.

The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Travel Advisory to  Avoid Nonessential Travel alert to China.

Because this is a quickly-evolving situation, and there are rapidly changing travel bans in some regions, as well as concerns about contagion and spread of the virus, we highly encourage students to not travel to or from Asia at this time. If students do travel to impacted regions, there is a chance that CDC restrictions would prohibit a return to the United States and/or campus.

In recognition of the CDC recommendations, we will keep the dorms open during this break so that all boarding students (domestic and international) have the option to stay at their SD home, on campus, during the break. There will not be any additional charge. Allowing our students to stay in the dorms is the best choice to keep our students and staff healthy and well.

We also ask that families from affected countries defer visiting their children in the United States, or from visiting campus, at this time, as health agencies still don't have a firm understanding on the incubation period of this virus, and travel restrictions may be put in place at any given time as this situation continues to evolve.

As more about the virus is understood, recommendations from the CDC may change. We are working closely with Nurse Toni Scott, our SD Director of Health Services, in coordination with the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, and we will keep you updated as new information becomes available. We realize some families and students may be disappointed not to be able to return home for break and are planning some fun, local outings to make the students’ holiday as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

Please email John Phillips, Director of Residential Life, at jphillips@sandomenico.org, and Carrie Robley, Assistant Head for Student Life at crobley@sandomenico.org, by this Friday, January 31, to let us know if your child will be staying in the dorms for February break, or if you have any questions.
