Dear SD Community Members,

In light of cold and flu season, we are writing today to ask you to please continue to be a good role model of proper personal hygiene and continue to protect yourselves and our community from the spread of viruses and germs.

REMEMBER, and remind your children to:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow or cough or sneeze into the neck of your shirt

  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands

  • Use single use tissue and dispose immediately

  • Do not share drinks, food, or utensils

  • Get good sleep and drink plenty of water

  • Get an annual flu (influenza) shot through your primary care provider, local minute clinic or campus health center

  • Clean and disinfect common touch surfaces frequently

ILLNESS STAY AT HOME POLICY

Any student with the following should stay home from school:

  • Fever

  • Gastroenteritis

  • Communicable disease

Definitions

  • Fever - a fever is an increase in body temperature, often because the body is working hard to fight off an infection.

  • Gastroenteritis (stomach flu) - inflammation of the stomach and intestines, typically resulting from bacterial toxins or viral infection and causing vomiting and diarrhea.

  • Communicable Diseases (CD) - communicable disease is an infectious disease that can be transferred/transmitted from an infected person to another individual. Organisms like bacteria, viruses, and parasites cause infectious diseases. Illness caused by an infectious disease is a common occurrence in students.

RETURN TO SCHOOL POLICY

Students may return to school according to the following:

  • Fever - student must be free of fever for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of fever reducers (Tylenol, Motrin).

  • Gastroenteritis - student must be free of vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours.

  • Communicable disease - follow protocol for specific disease.

Please also know that with our international population, San Domenico is keeping close tabs on the coronavirus 2019-nCoV. The CDC has stated that the immediate health risk from the virus to the general American public is considered low at this time and there are no cases of the virus in our SD community. We are nonetheless working closely with Toni Scott, our SD Director of Health Services, and the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, to stay on top of quickly changing information on the virus.

If you have any questions about staying healthy during this flu season or when to have children stay home or return to school, please contact our Director of Health Services at tscott@sandomenico.org or 415.258.1950.

Together, we can best promote the safety and health of our School community. Thank you for doing your part.

Sincerely,

Toni Scott
