SD Weekly Update

January 17, 2020

Dear San Domenico Families and Guardians,

This school year, we have continued to participate in professional development for faculty and staff in support of strengthening San Domenico’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In October, Welcoming Schools hosted a K-8 morning session and a 9-12 afternoon session around embracing family diversity and creating a (more) LGBTQ+ inclusive environment for all of our students, families, and community.

Specifically for K-8 faculty and staff, the topic was: Creating LGBTQ Inclusive Schools to be able to better develop LGBTQ inclusive classrooms and become more familiar with LGBTQ terminology. Additionally, teachers reviewed and learned about the Welcoming Schools curriculum that we are integrating into our K-8 programming. For 9-12 faculty and staff, the topic was: Supporting Transgender and Non-Binary Students to enhance our inclusive, safe, and supportive school environment for transgender and non-binary students.

In December 2019, Jason Clarke, Director of Information Technology, Erica Smith, Director of Dance and Theatre, Mark Churchill, Associate Director of Middle School and I attended the annual People of Color Conference and chaperoned four Upper School students to the Student Diversity and Leadership Conference. The environment of each of these conferences is one in which attendees, adults, and students, open up to vulnerability and participate in deep learning, all in support of creating and promoting a more equitable and just society for our students.

In considering how to support our students and families of color, and LGBTQ+ students and families, if you or a member of your family identifies as a person of color and/or LGBTQ+ and want to be connected with other self identifying San Domenico Families, please take a moment to fill out this form by February 1st, 2020. Once replies have been received, I will create mailing lists for our families to be better able to connect and support each other!

On February 25th, our counselors Lisa Richter, Christina Klein, Kathy Laughlin and I are excited to host Rick Oculto of Welcoming Schools to a K-12 Family Coffee informational session around their programming and what/how we are integrating this information at SD - keep on the lookout for a more detailed invitation!

Lastly, we will be continuing with the book talks of our community read, Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race by Debby Irving, using the reflection questions found at the end of each chapter. We will gather in my office which is located between M2 and M5, across from the MS Science & Technology building. See below for upcoming dates, times, and chapters:

  • January 30th: 8:10am-9:30am, 3:15pm-4:45pm (new time!), and 6:30-8:00pm → Chapters 13, 14 and 15
  • March 23rd: 8:10am-9:30am, 3:15pm-4:45pm (new time!), and 6:30-8:00pm → Chapters 16, 17 and 18

I welcome 2020 with a deep level of excitement and respect for the ongoing work of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion!

Best,

Kali Baird
Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Director of Teaching and Learning
