Grade Level Bulletins

SD Weekly Update

October 11, 2019

Dear San Domenico Families and Guardians,

I am honored and excited to be serving as SD’s first Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion! Some have asked what exactly this role entails, and I am writing today to share more about my job, and what we as a School community can do together. Part of my job description notes, “Using the school’s Mission and guided by its Strategic Plan, the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will operate with a social justice, student-centered mindset and work to foster a deep sense of belonging among all members of the San Domenico community.”

DEI efforts encompass and support the MANY aspects of diversity: gender, race, sexual orientation, ability, religion, age, and socioeconomic status and I am working towards supporting ALL of our students, Grades K-12. This looks different at each School level and is an ongoing, multi-year process. I am also working with K-12 teachers on curriculum evaluation, looking at opportunities to continue connecting directly with students using age-appropriate methodologies. Offering ways of connecting with our families is another vital part of this collective learning process.

We recently opened up conversations on the topic of race with our first Community Book Read (of several slated for this year), Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race by Debby Irving. Together with parents, guardians, and friends, the morning and evening sessions were each an hour and a half and actually went over time as participants were so connected and involved in the discussion! It was a brave space where we examined our own beliefs and how we came to hold them. If you missed this first book talk, please join us at any of our upcoming discussions AND feel free to jump in at any time as there is no need to have attended prior events to be able to participate!

Upcoming DEI Book Discussion dates for Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race:

  • October 16, 8:30 - 10:00 am in Mercedes Lounge - Chapters 8, 9, 10
  • October 17, 6:30 - 8:00 pm in our Alice Dupas Brown Library - Chapters 8, 9, 10
  • December 16, 8:30 - 10:00 am in Ferguson Conference Room - Chapters 11, 12
  • December 16, 6:30 - 8:00 pm in the Vivaldi Room (within the HOTA complex) - Chapters 11, 12

I hope to see you soon.

Kind regards,

Kali Baird
Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
