Dominican & San Domenico Reunion Weekend

Save the Date: Dominican and San Domenico Alumni Reunion Weekend:
May 3-4, 2019

The San Domenico Alumni Council and Advancement and Alumni Relations Office, together with Head of School, Cecily Stock ’77, and Sister Gervaise Valpey, O.P., are moving forward with a reimagined vision for the annual Alumni Reunion Weekend. We are excited to announce that Reunion will be shifting from September to May. Our next Alumni Reunion Weekend will be held in May 2019.

A shift to a spring timetable for Reunion presents many potential benefits. As with many of San Domenico’s peer schools that hold reunions in the spring, the opportunities for meaningful programming holds great appeal. With a goal of increasing participation and overall alumni engagement, springtime allows greater depth and diversity of options for showcasing the campus and current students in action. With the school year just getting under way in September, a reunion program in the fall presents more constraints. The spring is a dynamic and exciting time at San Domenico. We look forward to expanding our reach, growing Reunion attendance, evolving our alumni programming, and creating new connection opportunities for SD alumni.

In May 2019, all classes are invited to join in honoring the following classes celebrating milestone Reunion years:

Why shift the timing for Reunion?

The Alumni Council and School leadership have long been considering moving the date of Reunion, and the time feels right to make this shift now. Our Upper School will be fully co-ed after this year’s graduation. This, along with a number of campus-wide developments and recent progress, demonstrates that our San Domenico community is deeply-rooted and committed to our School’s mission, vision, and purpose now more than ever, as we look toward the future. By aligning our Alumni Relations calendar with optimal timing for our all-School calendar, we feel that we will create the best overall success for Reunion Weekend, providing the most in-depth and rewarding experience we can for our participating alumni.

The fall months will be open to developing new and expanded alumni programming not currently being offered, including networking events, seminars, service opportunities, and regional alumni gatherings based on specific demographics.

Has a date been set for Reunion 2019?

Yes. Please mark your calendars now for May 3 and May 4, 2019. Reunion 2019 will be held on campus, as well as have off-campus components including an All-Alumni Reception and Happy Hour, and individual class get-togethers.

If you have a suggestion for a Reunion activity that you’d like to share, please don’t hesitate to let us know at alums@sandomenico.org.

Will a Reunion be held in September 2018?

No, our next All-Alumni Reunion will be celebrated May 3-4, 2019, at which time we will recognize all classes ending in 3s, 4s, 8s, and 9s.

What does this mean for the Classes ending in 3’s and 8’s who would be celebrating a milestone Reunion year in 2018?

Classes ending in 3s and 8s will be officially recognized and honored in May 2019. Any of these classes who are still interested in gathering as a class in fall 2018 are welcome to reach out to the Alumni Relations Office (alums@sandomenico.org) to discuss interests, and explore how our office can help facilitate a private gathering. However, please know that 3s and 8s classes will be celebrated to the fullest extent in May 2019!

Please note that this will mean that the next milestone celebration for 3s and 8s will be held only four years later (instead of the standard five years), in May 2023.

What does this mean for the Classes ending in 4’s and 9’s who would be celebrating a milestone Reunion year in 2019?

Classes ending in 4s and 9s will be officially recognized and honored in May 2019. During this Reunion, classes ending in 3s and 8’ will also be recognized and honored. It will be an extensive, double celebration year - more amazing alumni in attendance, and more fun to be had by all!

Will the Julie Davis Butler Luncheon and Award Presentation still be a part of Reunion Weekend activities?

No, the Julie Davis Butler Luncheon and Award Presentation will continue to be hosted each September, in preservation of our students’ ROSE project timelines and JDB Committee framework. This year’s event will be on Friday, September 21, 2018.

All alumni will be invited to this incredibly heartfelt event, offering a unique opportunity to come to campus, witness the amazing work our students are doing around the globe, and hear directly from alumni who were positively impacted by previous JDB award funding. Please look for an email invitation to arrive in early August.

Will there be any opportunity for alumni to visit campus / attend an SD gathering in the fall of 2018?

Yes! As noted above, the annual Julie Davis Butler Luncheon and Award Presentations will be held on September 21, 2018, and all alumni are invited to join (official invitation and more information to follow in August). Additionally, there are campus traditions and events throughout November and December that alumni are always welcome and encouraged to attend, including the Upper School Musical, November 8-11, and Tableaux on December 7.

Will you continue the tradition of honoring an alumna/us with the Distinguished Alumni Award?

We do plan to continue our 55-year tradition of recognizing the accomplishments of our distinguished alumni. If you know a Dominican Convent/San Domenico alumna/us whose life and work you would like to see recognized with this special award, please submit your nomination through the Distinguished Alumni Nomination Form.

What kind of new and additional alumni programming do you have planned for the fall? Will these be introduced in fall 2018 or fall 2019?

With the transition to a springtime Reunion now officially underway, our Alumni Council and Advancement and Alumni Relations Offices are excited to begin planning and executing new and dynamic ways to engage our alumni - whether through our new SD alumni directory, SD Connect, through events here on campus, or through small, regional gatherings, seminars, etc., we hope to reach a broader spectrum of our alumni community through specific areas of interest, expertise, and locale.

New events and programs will be introduced both this fall, as well as in fall 2019, as we continue to grow our alumni programming platforms. As always, if you have a suggestion, please don’t hesitate to let us know at alums@sandomenico.org.
