College Preparation, Counseling, and Acceptances
We believe finding the right school is a match to be made, not a prize to be won. Our graduates attend prestigious name brand universities such as UC Berkeley, Duke, NYU, Tufts, and Stanford as well as small private colleges that are a best-fit for individual growth and success.
Our goal is to make the college application process as stress-free and successful as possible for both our students and their parents. At SD, college counseling is a full service support program working with students and parents on preparation, choices, visits, essays, applications, and transition. It is designed to give each student the opportunity to have multiple acceptances at colleges where they will thrive both academically and socially.
College counseling is a student-centered activity which should be based on college fit rather than college rank. This is a process encouraged by individual discussion, group dialogues, and thoughtful questioning. Our responsibility is to maintain firm expectations and accountability.
From Freshman to Senior Year
College preparation at SD begins long before the process of choosing which schools to apply to, writing those college essays, and filling out the applications.
Freshman focus on academics and build the skills they need to find success through our rigorous academic program while also nurturing their interests.
Sophomores continue their program of academic excellence and have discussions with the college counselor about the future process and plan. They prepare for the PSAT test, begin college visits, map out courses, and plan summer activities.
Juniors take the PSAT, receive timelines, and begin work on essays. Personal meetings with the college counselor facilitate college visits, summer plans, organizational help, and ensures academics are on target.
Senior students follow a detailed plan adjusted for their particular needs and meet regularly with the college counselor during the first semester. The class has a two day retreat to focus on common issues and students receive individual essay advice and revision help for all written material and submissions. Extensive time is given to help with their college list, the UC applications, and the Common Application with explanatory parent meetings. Students are held to a strict schedule and extra assistance is available for those who fall behind—all applications are submitted before Winter Break. Each student receives acceptances counsel to help make the final choice.
College / University Visits
Each year we have 40-60 colleges and universities visit San Domenico from across the nation and internationally. These visits give our students the chance to meet in small groups with our regional counselor and learn first hand what colleges have to offer them.
