Writing and Research Center

Writing and Research Center / Peer Tutoring

San Domenico’s Writing & Research Center (WRC) is a learning hub that provides Upper School students with one-on-one, small group, and full class support to enhance their writing skills and expand their knowledge of research strategies and resources. Its mission is to nurture each writer to develop their authentic voice with depth and clarity.

The WRC is one component of the SD Library Learning Commons which also includes the
Learning Resource Center (LRC) and the College Counselors. Together they nourish our community’s culture of curiosity.

Writing & Research Support

The WRC’s Writing Lab offers one-on-one writing support from Upper School Humanities faculty to all Upper School students. The Writing Lab guides students in their writing development and deepens their literacy scope and sequence at each grade level. This program is designed for all students, from those who need additional support to those who want to take their writing skills to the next level. Students can either make an appointment or drop in during:
Writing Lab on Thursdays between 1:20 pm - 2:10 pm.

The WRC trains students and teachers in research strategies, source evaluation, and using our EBSCO databases. Our EBSCO database suite includes specific reference collections for education, science, history, religion and philosophy, health, and ERIC (Education Resources Information Center.)

The WRC provides research and writing support across the curriculum for specific class-based assignments by interfacing directly with classes. WRC prepares individuated research-specific presentations for many classes, including the interdisciplinary SD service capstone assignment for juniors and seniors, the ROSE Service Project.

The WRC curates a comprehensive self-help writing and research guide WRC Canvas Course, for both students and faculty. The Canvas pages are populated with references and websites for all phases of writing from brainstorming, first drafts, re-write checklists, and editing suggestions.

Peer Tutoring

The WRC hosts the Upper School’s peer-tutoring program, in collaboration with the National Honor Society (NHS). This initiative exemplifies San Domenico's culture of collaborative learning.

Students apply to be peer tutors; then selected applicants spend several weeks discussing and practicing their coaching skills before offering one-on-one appointments with their fellow students. We currently offer tutoring sessions in Math, English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Science!

This type of academic support supplements the work a student may do with their teachers and the WRC staff — students may feel more comfortable talking with a fellow student. Peer tutors, meanwhile, pick up new coaching techniques, and gain experience with different learning styles. Throughout the academic year, peer tutors have regular check-ins to discuss their progress.

Schedule a peer tutoring session here:

Sessions are available from 12:10-12:50 on Tuesdays. Please sign up using the form below.
