San Domenico Kindergarten offers a nurturing, supportive foundation for your child's first years of learning

San Domenico Kindergarten offers a nurturing, supportive foundation for your child's first years of learning, helping them develop important habits of mind that will serve them throughout their years at SD. Guided by our core values of Study, Reflection, Community, and Service, we focus on educating the whole child: social, emotional, intellectual, and physical.

Kindergarten at San Domenico

At San Domenico, Kindergarten provides both the emotional and social support young children need as they begin their school careers, as well as the academic instruction to build strong skills that will ensure their success in the future. Here, your child will thrive in an engaging, nurturing, and safe environment five days a week from 8:10 am to 3:10 pm. SD Kindergarten is for children starting at 5 years old and lays the foundation for a successful Lower School experience, both academically and developmentally. Our program is homeroom-based and students are taught through leading practices in literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, music, and art each day. Projects like Money for Medicine, Worm Lab and days in the Garden of Hope allow K students to gain confidence in and out of the classroom.

A Day in the Life

Each morning, K students gather together for Morning Meeting, based on the Responsive Classroom model. Building upon regular routines, students greet their teachers and one another, identify the date and weather, celebrate birthdays, and sing songs of the season. Special helpers have opportunities to assist teachers. This shared time builds a strong sense of community. Stop by and you're guaranteed to hear children and teachers laughing and smiling.

After Morning Meeting, students begin their studies in stimulating, student-centered classrooms. Activity centers and small break-out groups allow for teachers to observe and interact with students individually to help them identify their strengths and gain confidence in the learning process. Group time after lunch allows for more community time as well as opportunities for parents and special guests to visit and share stories. Creative projects, lessons in the Garden of Hope, and fun events with their 4th Grade Buddies offer ample opportunities for K students to learn in a variety of ways.

Beyond the Classroom

San Domenico's beautiful campus, tucked in the hills of the sleepy town of San Anselmo, provides a sense of place and unique depth of learning for our students beyond the classroom. SD students develop a sense of place on our 515-acres, learn about sustainability and native plants and animals in our one-acre Garden of Hope and on hikes along our campus trails. As part of a school community that includes international boarding in our Upper School, even our youngest students will have the opportunity to learn about new cultures through activities on special days such as Chinese New Year or Nigeria Day.

Special Events

Special events create milestones throughout the year for our youngest students. Some of the exciting events we have for our K students are:

  • Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
  • Lunar New Year Parade
  • Worm Lab
  • Pancake and Pajamas
  • Candlelighting
