San Domenico is excited to offer a two week Orton Gillingham-based literacy program this summer! This reading camp is designed to support incoming first grade students who are progressing toward grade-level expectations in the areas of reading and spelling. Class time will focus on developing and reinforcing foundational skills such as letter sounds, letter formation, sight word recognition, sentence fluency, and spelling consistencies. Additionally, students will engage in a daily Reading Workshop where they will practice decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension skills. The class will use strategies that are multi-sensory and sequential in nature, providing repetition for the learning and consolidation of skills. This class will be taught by a qualified reading specialist.
Kristin loves being part of the San Domenico community and has been one of our first grade teachers since 2017. She received her Masters in Teaching from the University of San Francisco in 2012. Because of her love of teaching reading, she went back to USF in 2018 to obtain her certification as a Reading Specialist. Kristin has previously taught first grade and kindergarten at Convent of the Sacred Heart and Cascade Canyon. Creating a warm classroom environment is important to her as she wants her first graders to feel safe, happy, and excited to learn. She is passionate about instilling a foundational love for reading, writing, and math in her students. It gives her true joy to see her students engaging deeply with what they are learning and working together to build strong understandings. She strives to make learning meaningful for her students so they can apply new knowledge and insights beyond the walls of the classroom. In her spare time, she loves to go hiking, walk the beach, and spend time with her family.
