Get ready to stretch your creative muscles! Contemporary Dance Camp is geared towards students with previous experience with dance. Students will develop technical skills in Contemporary Dance, which combines elements of Modern Dance, Jazz, and Ballet, in a fun, supportive environment. Classes will include conditioning exercises, stretching, across-the-floor movement, improvisation, and choreography. Materials: Students need to wear appropriate dance/PE attire. Dance shoes, such as jazz shoes, half-soles, or ballet slippers, are optional.
Alyssa Carnahan is a dancer, dance teacher, and choreographer, originally from Sonoma County. She fell in love with ballet at age four and trained at Redwood Empire Ballet, Ballet Califia, ArtQuest Dance Company, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, from which she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2009. Alyssa has performed with Cal Poly Orchesis Dance Company, Walt Disney Parks Entertainment, Mills RepCo, and Ballet Califia Company. She danced lead roles in "Firebird," "Swan Lake," "Sleeping Beauty," and "A Midsummer Night's Dream," in addition to many contemporary works, such as "Herbs of the Soul," "American Portraits," "Rhapsody in Blue," and "Migrations,” choreographed by David McNaughton and Shelley Scott. In 2013, Alyssa was accepted into the MFA graduate program at Mills College in Oakland. She performed with Mills RepCo for two years, dancing in works by Merce Cunningham (restaged by Holley Farmer), and Sheldon Smith. Alyssa received the E.L. Wiegand Foundation Award, two years in a row, for scholarly and creative achievement, and her MFA thesis piece "Spirograph," which was performed by special invitation at the College of San Mateo. Alyssa received her MFA in Dance from Mills College in 2015. She has taught at schools and studios throughout the Bay Area, including the Dance Center of Santa Rosa, Just Dance Academy, Mills College, Presidio Dance Theater, Cross and Crown School, Tiburon-Belvedere Recreation, and Roustabout Theater. Alyssa joined the San Domenico faculty for the 2015-2016 school year, teaching Upper School dance, ballet, Dance Ensemble, and the Middle School Advanced Workshop.
