Panther Spotlight: SD Sailing Kicks Off Season with Five Top-Ten Finishes
The SD Sailing Team

The SD Sailing team is making waves during its second season as a recognized sport at SD. The Panthers competed in the season’s first regatta on September 24 and 25 in Point Richmond. The in-league competition featured 60 teams from more than 40 Bay Area schools. Although sailing conditions were tough, bringing light variable winds, three of our sailors, Merritt S. ’26, Prairie P. ’26, and Dylan S. ’25, found success and finished third on the first day.

Day two of the competition brought better winds and more racing. The team has been working hard on their boat handling and improving their starting strategy. Their focus showed with five top-ten finishes over five races for two of our Gold Fleet teams: Evie L. ’25, Nina P. ’24, Merritt S. ’26, and Dylan S. ’25

“Our young team has a lot of talent and is learning fast and staying focused,” says Head Coach Renee Corpuz-Lahne. Coach Renee, an active sailboat racer, is focused on teaching the team how to control what they can while not fixating on what is out of their control, as it is a lesson that translates directly to life outside of sailing. “My challenge for the team is to focus on the skills, and then the results will follow.”

The team's next event will be held October 8 and 9 in Monterey, CA.
