Boys basketball: Early buzzer-beater gives San Domenico thrilling win over Marin Academy

“For a moment after he hit the floor, Gavin Early still wasn’t certain if he made his shot. Then his San Domenico teammates pulled him up and gave him a hero’s celebration.

With seconds left on the clock and the Panthers trailing by one point, Early drove into the paint, went airborne and lofted the ball toward the hoop.

“All I saw was me, the ball and the guy in front of me,” Early said afterward.”

Boys basketball: International journey leads friends from Lithuania to San Domenico

“Gytis Gervickas has traveled halfway across the world with a basketball in hand, fueled by dreams of a professional career.

“Basketball is a second religion in Lithuania,” said the Vilnius native, who arrived at San Domenico last year. “When Lithuania plays, everyone watches.”

Gervickas made the journey with Matas Burinskas, a childhood friend and teammate who is a senior on a Panthers squad (18-3, 4-1 BCL West) energized for a run at the playoffs. The way Burinskas feeds the ball to Gervickas for a shot from beyond the arc, they play with a unique connection.

Girls basketball: San Domenico wins game, but Marin Academy scores points

“Maja Cykowska led the Panthers with a solid all-around game that included 12 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and two steals. Reeser hit three 3-pointers on her way to an 11-point night.

“We were asking Lily (Reeser) to do a lot against Marin Academy’s defense,” Fulton said. “All the girls had to do a lot tonight.”
