Pop-Up Book Reports Bring Black History to Life
LS Black History Month biographies

Our third graders recently completed their Black History Book Reports. “The purpose of this biography unit,” explains Third Grade Teacher Dodie Baker, “is for our students to learn about important figures past and present that they may not have not heard about before.”

Each student chose a Black visionary leader to become an expert about, identifying character traits, writing a summary, selecting a memorable quote, and drawing a timeline of key moments in the life of their subject. The students then created a beautifully crafted pop-up book report in file-folder style.

“This comprehensive book report is a perfect way for students to demonstrate their newfound knowledge, as well as honor these important Black Americans,” remarks Baker. Throughout the unit, students read many biographies about people from all over the world. Students learned the importance of learning about and listening to people whose voices have not always been heard throughout history.

To complete the project, Ms. Baker and Ms. Krizek showcased the students’ hard work with a video that they presented this week at the Lower School assembly celebrating Black History Month.
