Panther Spotlight: Track and Field Off to a Great Start
Panther Spotlight Track and Field

With last year’s All League seniors Kezian D. and Kevin L. now graduated and thriving at their respective colleges, the 2023-24 Track and Field team has picked up where they left off with lots to look forward to this year. The men's team has a strong group of younger distance runners and jumpers. Devin P. ’25, who competes in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter races, continues improving daily, setting a new school record at the first meet of the season. Joaquin F. ’24 won his 800-meter race in the same meet, arguably one of the most challenging events in track and field. George K. ’24 and Broady O. ’25 are also solid contenders in their respective races who will likely score points for the Panthers this season.

Braeden C. ’23, a sprinter and jumper, is expected to have another All League season. He's already out-jumped his competitors by an entire foot in the long jump this year and will likely pass the 20-foot mark. “I want to return to the Meet of Champions for the 100m, and I would like to make the first team for the 100m and long jump. I would also like to break the school record in the 100m,” says Braeden. “I've been working hard in the weight room throughout the year since the season ended, to recover from an injury and to give myself the best chance at being successful this season,” he adds. “I think that maintaining this work ethic is so important, especially for competing at the next level, as that is not only needed to get there, but it is also required of you once you get there.”

Meanwhile, Vivian L. ’24 leads the women’s team of predominantly freshman and sophomore sprinters and jumpers, who will gain valuable experience competing at the varsity level this season. There are high hopes for Maple S. ’24, competing in the top long and triple jumper.

Head coach Mark Churchill is optimistic about this season. “I'm excited for some of the individual performances and what the future holds for both teams as we continue growing and building the program,” he tells us.

At the Dublin Distance Fiesta over the weekend, Joaquin F. ’24 broke the two-minute barrier in the 800-meter run with a school record 1:59.24, placing 16th overall and winning his heat against 770 runners from across Northern California. Devin P. '25 broke his 3200-meter school record again finishing the race with a time of 9:56.93. The distance medley relay team featuring Joaquin F. ’24, Devin P. '25, Brody O. '25, and George K. '24 also beat their time coming in at 11:32.02.

Next for the team is the BCL League Meet #2 on Wednesday, March 22nd, at Kezar Stadium.
