In May of 2018, SD decided to move into the highly competitive BCL West athletic conference. At that time, our definition of success would be to simply field teams and compete. To do so, we focused on bringing in high-caliber coaches to spearhead our programs. Four short years later, we are clearly seeing the fruits of our labor. 

This year, an astounding 43 of our student-athletes earned BCL all-league recognition. This doubles the amount that we had in 2018-19 (the last full athletics year before the pandemic). Ten teams made the BCL playoffs, including Men's and Women's Cross Country, Women's Basketball, Men's Tennis, Men's and Women's Swim, Men’s and Women's Track, Baseball, and Badminton. Five of these teams went to championship meets and competitions, with Badminton emerging as league champions. Eight teams also advanced to North Coast Sectional Playoffs. Badminton finished third place in NCS, and Men's Track took fourth place for Northern California. 

Our small but mighty school celebrated a State Championship this year, brought home by our Women's Basketball team. Five student-athletes won eight individual League Championships in Swim, Track, and Badminton. We also had two NCS Individual Champions for Track and one State Qualifier for Swim. Our Sailing and Mountain Biking teams also had strong seasons, with Sailing routinely placing in the top five for each regatta. The Mountain Biking team came in second place in the NorCal Championship Race against 41 teams across Central and Northern California in Division 2. It was the best finish of any D2 team in the Bay Area.

To say this year in athletics was a success would be an understatement. Our impressive student-athletes, mentored by our top-notch coaching staff, have set the bar high for years to come. This growth in competitive athletics and all that comes with it—sportsmanship, camaraderie, self-confidence, community spirit— is what we envisioned for our students four years ago when we joined the BCL West. We look forward to what comes next.
