March is Women’s History Month, and what better way to celebrate than by honoring the legacy of Frida Kahlo? Our third-grade students took inspiration from this trailblazing artist, studying her bold self-portraits and rich use of symbolism before creating their own striking works of art.
After reading Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos, students explored Kahlo’s deep connection to animals and nature, incorporating meaningful creatures, flowers, and plants into their own self-portraits. In Spanish class, they expanded their vocabulary by learning the names of different animals—further deepening their understanding of Frida’s world. As a final step, each student will write a reflection on their artwork in both English and Spanish, connecting language and creativity in a powerful way.
