Beach Volleyball courts in use at SD

According to the American Volleyball Coaches Association, volleyball has been the fastest-growing NCAA sport over the past five years, with beach volleyball close behind.

When Athletic Director Mark Churchill recruited USC All-American and NCAA National Champion John Headlund to become Volleyball Director at San Domenico School, the pair had every intention of building something special together at SD. John saw great potential for building a beach volleyball program at SD and pushed to make our campus the first high school in Marin County to have a competition beach volleyball facility.

Completed in time for the 2024-25 school year, San Domenico now boasts two NCAA regulation-size courts, as well as a junior court for player development. The junior court is ideal for kids ages 10-12 who are learning the game. It allows younger athletes to develop their skills before moving to the larger courts, demonstrating SD’s commitment to athletics at all levels—a unique feature that makes our courts an exciting addition to our school.

“I grew up in Hawaii playing on the baby courts, which we now call ‘junior courts,’” said Volleyball Director John Hedlund. “The opportunity to train and play year-round played a significant role in my development as a player, and I’m confident it will do the same for our student-athletes.”

San Domenico’s commitment to providing top-notch, state-of-the-art beach volleyball courts is part of a three-pronged approach—coaching, facilities, and a nurturing environment—to becoming the premier independent school for student-athlete development. “We want our families to see our commitment to developing a thriving sports community with engaged supporters in this beautiful place we call home,” says Athletic Director Mark Churchill. “We look forward to hosting you all this upcoming school year.”
