新年快乐 Happy Lunar New Year!

Drums echoed through the halls of the Lower School this week as SD’s K-5 students paraded across the courtyard to the applause and cheering of their Middle School buddies. Meanwhile, the Upper School Asian Student Union hosted a Lunar New Year Palooza and Assembly, complete with students teaching mahjong, sharing boba tea, practicing calligraphy, and joyfully wishing each other “May all your wishes come true!” From the youngest kindergarteners to graduating seniors, our school community came together to welcome in the Year of the Snake, honoring the rich cultural heritage of the Lunar New Year through art, music, food, and celebration.

Lower School
K-5 students transformed their main courtyard into a mesmerizing parade of movement, music, and color. Each grade brought their unique artistic vision to life: kindergarten students slithered in snake hats, first graders shook snake tassels, second graders twizzled hand-painted drums, third graders showed off their hand-made lion and dragon costumes, and fourth and fifth graders illuminated the procession with traditional hand-painted lanterns. Everyone wore their Year of the Snake red zodiac t-shirts, designed by K-8 Mandarin students!

Middle School
Middle School students lined the parade route, cheering on their younger buddies, before transforming the courtyard into a bustling market square, where they presented an impressive array of traditional foods from their innovative “food trucks” – a creative collaboration between their cultural studies and art curriculum.

Upper School
The Asian Student Association (ASA) elevated this year’s celebrations with an interactive cultural fair on the Senior Lawn. Students tried their hand at traditional brush painting, learned the art of paper cutting, and competed in friendly rounds of mahjong. The air was filled with the sweet scent of boba tea and the cheerful exchange of red envelopes – a symbol of prosperity and good luck. The Upper School Mandarin language students joined a large cohort of SD’s boarding students to venture into San Francisco's historic Chinatown, where they practiced their conversational skills with local merchants and experienced the city’s spectacular Lunar New Year festivities.

Special thanks to the collaborative efforts of our dedicated faculty members: Shirley Li, Suzanne Miazga, and Steve Pierce, under the thoughtful coordination of Mandarin Teacher Shu-Chen Lin. Their work exemplifies San Domenico’s commitment to fostering global citizenship and cultural appreciation.

We wish everyone a very happy Year of the Snake!
