The big news on campus this week was the San Domenico vs. Athenian faceoff in the CIF State Championships tournament! We cheered on the Panthers as they battled The Athenian School in the Northern California finals, with the winner going to the State Championships finals in Sacramento. The Athenian bleachers were full of SD fans, while there was standing room only for the livestream broadcast direct to Mercedes Lounge. Unfortunately, the basketball team lost the game, but we could not be more proud of our players, including Irakli J. ’25, Arthur M.’ 25, Kris J. ’25, Omar W. ’26, Chi O. ’25, Derek K .’26, Noah B.’ 25, Rex B. ’25, Jason L. ’26, Santi R. ’25, and Stephen S. ’25. Senior Leo M. ’24 will be continuing his basketball career in college next year. Great season, Panthers!
While the basketball season came to a close, our badminton team opened the season on fire, going undefeated in our first two matches. Players Aarya C. ’24, Vesta J. ’25, Tina T. ’25, Martin P. ’25, Ivan B. ’24, Bosson C. ’25, Zooye C. ’26, Yohan H. ’24, Lola H. ’ 27, Mandy H. ’27, Jenice J. ’26, Leo L. ’25, Frank S. ’27, Jennie T .’27, Owen W. ’25, Gary W. ’27, Grace W. ’26, Kevin Y. ’25, and Peter Z. ’25 are off to a great start!
Over the weekend, the weather turned cold and rainy—perfect for lounging and relaxation. In the last few weeks, we upgraded the dorm lounges with cozy furniture, providing extra space to curl up and watch movies and study together with our floormates. We also set up movies on the big screen in Mercedes, where large groups of students hunkered down to watch live action remakes of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” and “Cinderella.” Basketball student athletes Irakli J. and Omar W. got some well-deserved down time to watch a movie and eat good food after a long day of practice!
Early in the week, the West Building hosted the Community Dinner. The theme was “Springing Forward,” with a menu complete with seasonal fruits and vegetables, and a focus on the rapidly-progressing spring semester. The students in West are predominantly seniors, and are thinking about their last few months at San Domenico and impending graduation. As we look forward to our Spring Discovery trips in a few short weeks, our senior class is making their last memories and savoring special moments with friends and classmates. I am so grateful for all of the planning that goes into Community Dinners, and the robust support provided by our Head Prefects Aarya C. and Alastair K. ’24, fellow prefects Carmellina C. ’24 and Chi O., Resident Faculty members, and the Epicurean staff. I am also grateful to the seniors in West Dorm, including Joanna M. ’24, Charlee D. ’24, and Yohan H., who helped make the floral arrangements for each table.
As the semester progresses, we look forward to sharing what is next in the lives of our students here at SD Boarding!
