Panthers, can you feel that chill in the wind, the sunset coming minutes sooner, and the leaves crunching underfoot? Fall semester is in full swing, and so are the projects that make our community vibrant, collaborative, and engaged with each other’s great ideas. On Saturday, student helpers continued the creative process of designing the giant chess board, using painter’s tape and squares measured by Resident Faculty and Director of Alumni Engagement Charis Adams. The students meticulously aligned each corner and secured each edge. The next step was painting, and Resident Faculty Em Polsinello and students carefully sprayed into the negative space of the board. One more coat of paint and it will be time to remove the tape and reveal SD’s brand new chess board!
On Monday, students began making their posters and writing speeches for the Club Fair, and shared with me a little about some of the clubs they will offer this year:
Kayla L. ’26 described Photography Club as, “learning how to take and edit photos, jpeg and raw, and practice on field trips and at sports games. We will also have discussion forums and lectures if students are interested. I’m excited to share this unique skill with others, the art of making a perfect action shot!”
Angela S. ’27 promoted Hip Hop Club, where students can “learn and practice different styles every Thursday: Afro, pop, breaking, old school, and jazz. It’s open to any level, and people can choose if they want to participate in the Dance Concert at the end of the year. I like that there are all different grades involved, it's a bonding experience!”
Zooye C. ’26 was pondering her poster as she explained Young Artist Studio: “We’ll create art with different mediums, to decorate our campus or to auction off, and with the money we’ll donate it to charities.”
Harry F. ’26 was elated to start Poetry Club: “We’ll meet and discuss and analyze different poems. I want people to bring poems in all languages to share. I also want to write our own poems and share them at ‘Pizza and Poetry Night’ at the end of the year, and maybe secure a spot on the chalkboard by the library to display our poems.”
Liza K. ’27 and Cynthia Z. ’27 endorsed Food & Culture as a club where “we’ll design a few dishes each month and cook them together, and we’ll work with the dining hall to change and revise the menu each month.”
Steve S. ’27 illustrated Math Club as a place “for students wanting to improve their math skills. We’ll offer tutoring, competition prep, and get into some theory and lectures!”
Alicia W. ’27 and Henry S. ’27 shared about Next Generation Finance, “the goal of this club is to teach the next generation, so that when they grow up and become young adults, they can make wise decisions by using what they learned about finance and investing from us. In order to approach this goal, we will do research to learn about finance and we will use what we learn to make slideshows and videos which will be updated on our website.”
All of us in boarding are inspired and excited by these creative and insightful endeavors, and looking forward to seeing what blossoms from each club’s effort and talent!
