Coach’s Corner: Basketball Director Tyler Gaffaney

"A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit." — Greek Proverb.

One of the best features of high school sports is its strong sense of tradition and legacy. Although a student-athlete will only attend San Domenico for four years, they have an opportunity to be a part of the Panther community for a lifetime. That sense of being a part of something greater than yourself is both meaningful and motivating.

Our athletes have the responsibility to be positive role models because wherever they go, they are always representing San Domenico and influencing the generations of future Panthers to come. As a result, we expect our student-athletes to be humble, work hard, and show respect at all times.

Before each practice, I think about providing our student-athletes with two things: challenge and support. Players cannot improve without the appropriate amount of both. Without enough challenges, players get bored and their growth stagnates. Conversely, players become overwhelmed when faced with too much challenge. Finding the right amount of challenge and pairing that with a high level of support is key to continual development.

We’re working towards playing in a way that our community identifies with and can be proud of supporting. When you attend our games this year, you can expect to see a team that competes for 32 minutes, works hard for each other, and respects everyone on and off the court.
