This week, English Teacher Sonya Evans’ AP Literature class had their first literary salon day.
After completing their essays applying critical lenses to Mrs. Dalloway, students enjoyed English tea, cake, and cookies, while sharing their thesis statements with their peers.
“The students eloquently described the nuances of their reading through the Psychoanalytic, Historical, Marxist, Deconstructionist, Feminist, Archetypal, Moral/Intellectual, Structuralist, Queer Theory, and New Critical approaches,” explained Evans. “Each student demonstrated their understanding of the approach and the text, and described how they had applied their chosen critical lens to their writing. They sounded more like college students than high school seniors.”
“We even had a surprise visit from Mr. Sanders, who remembers teaching Mrs. Dalloway in his English teaching days,” said Ms. Evans with a smile.
