A Legacy of Perseverance
Saliah J '25 - Panther Spotlight

Saliah J. ’25 has been a cornerstone of San Domenico’s Women’s Soccer team since her arrival as an international boarding student from Zimbabwe. Growing up in a country where female participation in soccer is rare, Saliah found motivation to pursue the sport by recognizing the potential for young women back home. “I hope to represent my country well and bring more exposure, hope, and motivation to young females with similar goals,” Saliah explains. This drive has shaped her journey and her commitment to excellence on the field. When Saliah graduates from SD this spring, she will continue her journey playing D1 soccer at Southern Mississippi University.

This season, Saliah’s grueling return from a ruptured ACL has been nothing short of inspiring. Not only has she regained her position as one of the team’s standout players, but she has also embodied the determination and grit that define SD Athletics. “Her recovery from ACL surgery has been impressive,” shares Head Coach Fiona O’Sullivan. “She worked tirelessly around the clock to return from an injury that tests the resolve of even the world’s most seasoned and professional athletes.”

With several players sidelined by injuries, the team faced a challenging season this year. Despite these setbacks, the team felt Saliah’s presence as she helped unite and motivate the team. “She attended every game and practice, inspiring the team with her vibrant personality,” says her teammate and fellow captain, Ana W. ’25. “Saliah reminds us to support each other as a team, showing up for those who need it and delivering the best motivational talks before every game. She has inspired me to push beyond my limits and stand up for what I believe is right. She’s always there to listen and offer advice on growing as players and individuals.”

Coach O’Sullivan emphasizes Saliah’s leadership: “Saliah leads by example. She sets the tone for practice and games, stays after practice to put in extra work, and acts as a cheerleader for her teammates. She helps bring out the best in those around her.”

Saliah returned to the field mid-January, and her presence has made an immediate impact as the team earns crucial points down the homestretch of the regular season. Notably, last week, they secured two ties against Lick-Wilmerding and Convent.

Now fully back on the field, Saliah has taken time to reflect on her challenges during her recovery. “Physically, recovering was a long process that required help from a trainer and a physical therapist. Mentally, it was an even greater challenge. I always reminded myself that everything happens for a reason and that I wouldn’t be given this challenge if I wasn’t tough enough.” For Saliah, one of her proudest moments this season was playing on her senior night. “After working so hard through my recovery, it meant a lot to have that moment.”

Looking to the future, Saliah is excited to begin a new chapter playing D1 soccer at Southern Miss. Coach O’Sullivan reflected on Saliah’s achievement with immense pride. “Four years ago, when I met her, Saliah told me she wanted to play soccer in college. Since then, I’ve watched her navigate obstacles, improve her game, watch film, and stay focused on her goal. Now that she’s achieved it, I couldn’t be more proud. It’s a testament to how anything is possible with talent, belief, and hard work.” Saliah echoes this sentiment, saying, “I’m looking forward to playing among high-level athletes, pushing myself to my full potential, and combining my passion with that of my new teammates.”

As she prepares to graduate from SD, Saliah hopes her legacy will be one of perseverance and hard work. “Even when faced with seemingly impossible challenges, the most important thing is to never forget the hard work that brought you this far.”

There’s no question that Saliah’s journey from Zimbabwe to San Domenico and beyond is a testament to her unwavering dedication—a legacy that will inspire generations of San Domenico athletes.
