For my birthday I bought myself an unusual gift. It is a calendar inspired by the Stoic philosophy of Memento Mori (see picture.) The calendar consists of a series of small squares each representing one week of your life. Each week you black out another square. The first thing you notice is that you have much fewer weeks than you thought! The second thing you realize is that you should not waste a single week being stressed, angry, or discouraged. Every week is a unique and sacred opportunity to be the person you want to be.
Our reflection this week comes from the poet Mary Oliver:
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
With your one wild and precious life?
