Shakespeare Competition Winners Head to Regionals
2022 Shakespeare Contest Winners Lily, Gael, Chloe, Maple

Once again, our students are competing in the English Speaking Union's National Shakespeare Competition. Over 20,000 students across the United States compete each year. Schools hold in-house competitions; school winners move on to the Regionals; winners of the Regionals move on to the Nationals. In the past nine years, nine San Domenico students have placed in the top 3 regionally, and alum Ogechi Egonu won the National Competition in 2017.

We had to make adjustments to the competition due to Covid restrictions; nonetheless, we had wonderful and enthusiastic performances from all of the 26 competitors.

This year’s top honors at SD went to:

  • 1st place: Chloe O'Shea ‘24 - Parolles, All's Well that Ends Well.
  • 2nd place: Lily Cline ‘22 - Imogen, Cymbeline
  • 3rd place tie:
    • Gael Taylor ‘22 - Aaron, Titus Andronicus
    • Maple Silverstein ‘24 - Benedick, Much Ado About Nothing

This year, our first and second-place winners will move on to the Regionals. In this competition, Chloe and Lily will perform their monologues again, and each will perform a sonnet as well. We will begin working on their sonnets this week. We will record these performances to submit to the Regional judges, as it will be conducted virtually due to COVID restrictions.

A huge thank you to our San Domenico Judges, who generously gave up their afternoon to make this happen: Sonya Evans, Eugenia Ives, Claire Barsanti, and Julianne Bretan. We could not have asked for a more committed, thoughtful, and positive group!

Please congratulate our top placers! And, rest assured, this generation is keeping Shakespeare alive!
