Panther Spotlight: SD Shines in North Coast Section Playoffs
Kezian Dunn - Haley Ballard - NCS champs

The Track and Field and Badminton teams each competed in the North Coast Section (NCS) Championships on May 14th. Both teams represented SD well during a long day of competition.

The Track and Field team narrowly missed the podium coming in fourth place. On the individual side, Kezian Dunn ’22 and Hayley Ballard ’23 were crowned NCS Champions in their respective events, the shot put and the 3200-meter race. Kezian has walked around campus with a pep in his step this week. "It's hard to describe how great I feel right now. Winning an NCS title is something that I have had my sights on since freshman year. I knew that I had a good shot at being a champion, especially this year. I dedicated myself to being the best version of myself, and I'm proud to say that I'm an NCS Champion! Seeing all my hard work come to fruition is incredible." Kezian and Hayley will compete at the Meet of Champions this Friday and Saturday (May 20-21) at Dublin High School.

Head coach and Athletic Director Mark Churchill was excited to share his thoughts about the team. "At the beginning of the year, our student-athletes set out to compete in the Meet of Champions. They dedicated themselves to training and competing at the highest level, so I am proud of them for accomplishing their goal, and I am also impressed by how they got there."

Eric Liu and Martin Peng

Meanwhile, the Badminton team won third place at NCS, the highest finish in SD's history, after securing the BCL-W league championship. The third-place NCS finish caps off an outstanding season with ten players winning all-league honors, including men’s doubles league champions Eric Liu ’23 and Martin Peng ’25. "I’m so proud of this group,” says head coach Julie Lanzarin. “Their commitment to excellence has been a major contributing factor to our success individually and collectively. I know that they will continue improving and making themselves and the school proud."
