Panthers Win Outstanding Student Athletes Award
Kezian Dunn and Piper Fleece with their MAF Awards

Piper Fleece ’22 (Basketball) and Kezian Dunn ’22 (Track and Field) were honored on Monday, May 2 at a special banquet event celebrating the 2022 winners of the Marin Athletic Foundation (MAF) Outstanding Student Athletes Award. Piper and Kezian, who were nominated for the award by SD Athletics staff, were also both awarded scholarship prizes in response to their submitted essays.

“I’m so proud of Piper and Kezian for this much-deserved recognition,” said SD Athletic Director Mark Churchill. “Their involvement on and off the field represents what we teach all of our students at SD, and I’m delighted with how they represented our community."

The Outstanding Student Athletes Award recognizes student-athletes from across Marin who exemplify success and leadership on and off the field. As Judy Colton, MAF Board of Directors and OSA event chairperson, told the Marin Independent Journal

“These students are an accomplished group of young adults… Criteria considered in determining the students who receive this award are first and foremost Athletic Involvement and Scholarship followed by Leadership, School-Community Involvement and Deportment. The MAF is proud to be able to honor these outstanding students who are truly the best of the best and are representative of the fine educational institutions we have here in Marin County.”

Piper Fleece
At first glance, you wouldn’t think Piper was a co-captain and the starting point guard for a Division 5 state championship basketball team. At only 5’2”, she’s deceptively quick and smart on the court, and plays much bigger than her stature. Coach Mike Fulton states, “Piper brought an intensity level that inspired her teammates and coaching staff.” Four years ago during her freshman year, she never would have considered that the leadership role on the team would be hers. But she grew into the position, gained respect from her coaches and teammates, and led the team through some of the toughest games they ever played, winning a title no one ever expected them to win. While earning the state title, CIF also awarded her the Pursuing Victory With Honor awards for the championship game. Little time to celebrate, as two days later she began her track and soccer practices. Off the court, pitch, or track, Piper is also a very accomplished student and leader in the community. She was elected to the student council for her junior and senior years. Additionally, she is an active volunteer with Sparkle Foundation, an organization that supports single mothers and their dependent children in Marin and the surrounding Bay Area. Piper parlayed her academic, athletic, and community service experience into an acceptance to Tulane University to study public health on a pre-medical track. She also hopes to play some club sports.

Kezian Dunn
Whether on the track, in the press box, or at the scorer’s table, Kezian has made his impact at San Domenico in a variety of ways. Kezian was named a captain for the Varsity Track and Field team and has won BCL West titles in both Shot Put and Discus. A school record holder and a leading point scorer, Kezian has been instrumental in the Panthers’ rise to be a consistent challenger. Coach Mark Chuchill states, “he has been the top thrower in all of our league meets and captured wins in each invitational meet we have attended, while also setting school records along the way.” Off the field, Kezian has worked countless jobs for the San Domenico Athletics program, helping with digital media, operating the scoreboard, filming for live steams, and refereeing Middle School games. He also championed the founding of San Domenico’s flag football program and was named an MVP in its first season. Kezian has stepped in wherever and whenever needed, and is incredibly proud to have played a role in the rise of San Domenico Athletics. Kezian plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to study applied movement science, and plans to continue Track at the club level.
