National award-winner Senior Lily Cline Featured on ABC News

Senior Lily Cline was recently featured on ABC Channel 7 news, recognizing her achievement winning a national songwriting award from the National Endowment for the Arts with the American Theater Wing. Lily composed and performed her song, “Ganbare” in SD’s student-produced musical film, “Forgotten Voices”.

“I brought a lot of myself into this character: a seventeen year old Japanese-American young woman struggling to find her place in the world. Her song, “Ganbare,” a Japanese word meaning “work hard,” was a fusion of my own story with hers, and an exploration of songwriting.”
— Lily Cline

Director of Dance and Theatre Arts, Erica Smith, also appears in the ABC news clip, and speaks to the opportunity the award affords Lily - to work with a mentor and a music director to hone her original song into a Broadway-ready composition, recorded by Broadway musicians and vocalists in New York City. Learn more about Lily’s award, and read her moving personal reflection, here.
