Last Friday marked the end of our first athletic season this year. This was significant in that most of us were very skeptical any sports would take place in the school year at all. Even after the first few days of the season we still did not have permits filed, courts reserved, or clear directions from local health officials on how to safely have competition. The Women's Tennis team and the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams trained and prepared regardless, and led the way for San Domenico to get life back on track and have athletics return to the fields - and tennis courts!
Our Women’s Tennis team ended the season with some individual triumphs in doubles. Mina Swaim and Lily Reeser earned Panther of the Week Honors with their two wins against Bay and Drew last week. The future is bright for this team who has no graduating seniors and is full of some talented freshmen.
The Men's Cross Country season ended with the team moving up in the BCL West with a seventh place finish, moving ahead of Drew, Bay, and Waldorf. Senior Will Kunze finished the season claiming the fastest time from an SD runner on the Linley Meadow championship course and a school record for 5k.
The highlight of the season belongs to the Women's Cross Country team. The team has trained hard all year and improved personal performances at each race but always finished in the same spot. Last week they continued their improvement and ended up in third place for the league. To give perspective on this, the teams they lost to, University and Lick, were first and second place at the State meet last year far outdistancing any other team. Two teams they beat, Urban and MA, qualified for state last year and Urban was in seventh place. Convent, Drew, Bay, and Nueva were all behind our athletes. The team was led by Hayley Ballard who easily won her race by over a minute and had the second fastest time of the day to a senior from Lick. Hayley's time was the fourth fastest Sophomore time ever in our league and in the top 15 of all grades.
Season two kicks off this week with Badminton, Baseball, Men's Tennis, and Track and Field. Tennis and Baseball will both compete today against Lick and Stuart Hall, respectively. Go Panthers!
