In conjunction with Brian Kaplan in the 3D Makers Lab and Ryan Hopper, fifth grade students used their geometry and measurement skills to create 3-dimensional shapes with a specific volume. They worked in groups and made a 3D model of a home or structure out of paper. After they agreed on the dimensions and collaborated making the structure, they used a Carvey application on the laptops called Easel to design their panels or faces of the shape. Once finalized, they will use a digital design software to begin the process of cutting it out of wood. These wood homes will be assembled next week and their task will be to measure the volume and area of their structure. It has been a joy watching the students' enthusiasm and engagement with this project.
