#FacesOfSD: Meet Mark Churchill, Director of Athletics

Mark Churchill

Mark Churchill has been an educator for over fifteen years, working in both public and independent schools on the East and West coast. Mark began his teaching at his alma mater in the small town of Morrisville, Vermont, teaching middle school math and coaching high school track and cross country for eight years. Mark led his teams to over 20 state level individual and team championships in cross country, nordic skiing, and track and field. Mark moved to the Bay Area midway through his career, teaching and coaching at the Chinese American International School, taking four international trips with students to China and Taiwan before transitioning to Dean of Students. Mark joined the San Domenico faculty and staff in 2014 as MS Dean of Students, and now serves as Director of Athletics, and as the Head Coach for cross country and track for Upper School. He holds a B.S. in Business Management from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, and an M.A. in Middle Level Education from Johnson State College in Johnson, Vermont.

“My favorite part of being a member of the San Domenico community is engaging in school spirit events with both the students and the faculty.”

Morrisville, Vermont

Why did you choose to work at San Domenico?

The teachers and the campus attracted me to SD when I first came to one of the iTeach conferences 7 years ago.

What is your favorite annual event at SD?

My family really enjoys the Garden Fair in October.  We love seeing the whole community come together for good food, crafts, and games.

What activities do you participate in at SD?

I coach Cross Country and Track and Field and love all activities outside.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I love Mt. Biking on new trails whenever I can.

What makes a “good day” at school?

A day that I can hear laughter and excitement on the playgrounds and fields. A day when a student comes up to me to tell me about something exciting that happened to them.

What is your favorite place in the world?

On a trail, running or biking. Oregon and Vermont have the best trails.

When do you feel joyful?

When I am around my family, on an adventure.

What is your ideal weekend?

Starting the day with a run, having a breakfast that includes bacon and Vermont maple syrup, and then getting outside with the kids.

What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?

I could watch or read Lord of the Rings over and over again.

What academic accomplishments have filled you with pride?

I really love organizing Unity Week each October. I love seeing all students K-12 and faculty getting to know each other better and wearing the same shirts. I love seeing students interacting with each other outside of the classroom and across grade levels.

What personal accomplishments have filled you with pride?

I have loved watching the cross country teams and track teams grow since I have been at San Domenico. We have gone from 4-5 athletes a few years ago to almost 40 on the team now.  They come to practice ready to learn something new, improve their times and marks, and gain a lifelong love for the sport.
