Dorm News: Start of the New Year!

Happy New Year from our Boarding Community!

Boarding Students Opening Christmas Presents in the Dorms

As we made our way back to classes the last two weeks, we’re still savoring the memories of our incredible break full of fun, food, festivities - and plenty of much-needed rest. After a busy first semester, it was wonderful to be able to just “be.”

While many of our students left campus for most or all of the break, quite a few stayed in the dorms. The entire Resident Faculty team did their best to ensure that our students had plenty of good food to eat, lots of trips off campus, and many celebratory events to mark the holidays. We recognize that we can’t replace the experience of being home for the holidays, but we did our best to make everyone feel celebrated in their home away from home.

Opening presents on Christmas morning

Students woke up on Christmas morning to stockings outside their doors filled with treats. Later in the morning they met in Mercedes to receive individual gifts and participate in a gift exchange. Aarya (‘25) received a blanket and a portable charger: “Christmas was so much fun. We all had stockings outside our doors and it was fun hanging out together and opening presents in Mercedes.”  Abylai (‘22) also enjoyed his gifts, especially his blanket and box of snacks, which all of the students received. A special thanks to Alexis Gerlach and her many RF elves for creating a special Christmas celebration for the students.

On New Year’s Eve, students worked under the direction of new Resident Faculty and SD alum Madeleine Pechner to decorate Mercedes for the big night. They had special glasses for sparkling apple cider and ate mini pizza snacks and ice cream. They sang karaoke and played games by the fire as they waited to ring in the New Year at midnight with lots of cheers and party poppers.

On a Hike to Alamere Falls in Point Reyes, Jan 2022

In addition to many off-campus trips to San Francisco, museums, and local shopping trips to Northgate and Vintage Oaks and restaurants, Mark and Mary Churchill offered a New Year’s Day hike to Alamere Falls in Point Reyes National Park. Mary reported “crystal clear blue skies with amazing views and perfect temperatures. We had lunch at the falls. Our students hiked 8.5 miles! Here’s to a healthy and strong 2022!” What a great way to start the New Year.

As wonderful as it was to enjoy some downtime together on campus, we’re happy to see all the students returned to campus. We are taking extra precautions to make sure everyone has a safe and healthy 2022 and are grateful for everyone’s commitment to our community.

Happy New Year from all of us in Dorms!
