Boarding Students During Thanksgiving Break

The holidays represent a special time in our lives. Many of our students miss celebrating holidays like Lunar New Year with their families and friends, or birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, and any of the many holidays our students celebrate. While nothing can ever take the place of the familiar and rich traditions we are accustomed to, we do make an effort in the dorms to acknowledge and celebrate birthdays and holidays, creating our own traditions together.

This year we've celebrated individual birthdays with special treats as a whole community. Earlier in the year, senior Gemma, with the help of some yummy food from her parents, led us in celebrating Rosh Hashanah in Mercedes Lounge. We celebrated Halloween with pumpkin carving, the Candy Run, and a scavenger hunt. Currently our elves are decorating the dorms for Christmas and Hanukkah. And while this Thanksgiving required flexibility and shifting of gears, like so many things this year, we enjoyed a delicious meal together. As Director of Residential Life Kali Baird shared, "The traditional holiday meal of turkey and all the ‘fixins’ was delicious this Thanksgiving! And students appreciated the hot cider and chocolate that kept us warm in the chilly evening."

It cannot be denied, however, that it wasn't the day that many had expected, in spite of the turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pies. Senior Sam was looking for a way to lift his spirits. Knowing that we often receive the most when we give, he hosted an evening barbecue for the dorms that not only lifted his spirits but those of the entire community. As the smells of the grilled meats and the sounds of Sam's multi-generational playlist filled the courtyard, students began to gather. Resident Faculty Julie Lanzarin noted, "Sam really brought everyone together - everyone was laughing and enjoying their time together. After the barbecue people stayed and played games together. It was a memorable evening for everyone and seeing Sam's smile was wonderful." Sam agreed,"It really was a surprise to me, too. I had no idea I was going to get to cook, so if it lifted anyone’s spirits, I think it would be mine the most."

Thank you, Sam! We are so grateful to have a strong team of adults and students working together to help us create our own community traditions.

NOTE: Now that we have returned to in-person learning, our boarding students are currently practicing a modified hybrid of a "bubble" or "pod" with their floors, while maintaining masks and distance from those living on other floors in common spaces and outdoors. Students and Resident Faculty are working together to keep our Boarding and broader school community as safe as possible. While the rules and procedures are too extensive to list here, please know that students appearing in photos are safely interacting with their peers according to the updated guidelines, based on current Marin Public Health protocols. All students are tested bi-weekly and all Resident Faculty and their on-campus families follow additional safety measures and are tested monthly.
