San Domenico School News & Events

Aquatics and Community Center Groundbreaking

In the midst of these challenging times, we are excited to share good news. Earlier this week, San Domenico was approved to begin construction on our new Sister Gervaise Valpey Community Center and Aquatic Complex! Groundbreaking will take place this coming Monday, November 2. Phase I of the project will include a new competition size pool - 30 meters long, 25 yards wide, and 12 swimming lanes - pool deck, showers and lockers. The aquatics center will be located on the same site as the current pool, which was tagged as end-of-life by the County several years ago. Construction is expected to run about seven months.

This long-awaited project will be the first major new building project on campus in 20 years. The new complex will provide best-in-class facilities for San Domenico’s interscholastic swimming program as well as physical education and cross training, K-12. Interscholastic water polo will also be offered beginning in 2021.

“This is a huge step toward being a leading team in aquatics. To have a state-of-the-art pool to train in, for all sports, is a game changer for the school. The ability to work with students K-12 is what excites me the most.” shares Director of Aquatics, Mark Anderson. “To be able to coach children from development to competitive, college bound JV and Varsity players is really a dream come true.”

Adds Athletic Director, Mark Churchill, “San Domenico has been growing on the athletics front and we are responding to the needs of our scholar athletes by giving them facilities to train and compete in. This aquatic center will be a boost to our athletic teams, K-12 PE and cross training, boarding program, and community."

San Domenico has been blessed with a remarkable team of individuals who have been working tirelessly to move our School forward under very challenging circumstances. While our timeline for this project was disrupted due to the pandemic, we have remained firmly committed to moving forward.

We plan to implement Phase II of the project - construction of our new Community Center - once we are able to safely resume fundraising efforts. While our plans were halted in March, 2020 due to shelter-in-place orders, we are once again pivoting, exploring creative alternatives to meeting with donors and friends in support of this linchpin project.

The new complex has been named in honor of Sister Gervaise Valpey, President Emerita, a beloved and influential member of the San Domenico community. Sister Gervaise was instrumental in moving our 170-year old school to its current 515-acre location in San Anselmo. She also lived on campus here for more than 50 years and is loved by students K-12, alumni, and SD families around the world. It is only fitting that this exciting project be named in her honor.

More information will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead. More than anything else, we are deeply grateful for the generosity of our donors whose early support for this project has enabled us to move forward. Thank you for believing in San Domenico, and in the promise of what we can accomplish together.
