About the Role
The Head Varsity Baseball Coach at San Domenico School is responsible for leading all aspects of the varsity baseball program with a focus on competitive excellence, strategic team development, and player leadership. This role emphasizes high-level performance and tactical execution while preparing student-athletes for collegiate-level competition. The coach ensures the program operates with integrity and reflects the school’s core values of study, reflection, community, and service.
San Domenico fields a varsity interscholastic baseball team in the spring season, typically running from February through May. The Head Coach leads and supervises all aspects of the varsity season, including off-season conditioning and program building.
Practices and games are held after school on weekdays and on Saturdays. The Head Coach plans and executes daily practices, manages all in-game strategy and personnel decisions, and mentors student-athletes to ensure they maintain a high standard of academic performance alongside their athletic pursuits.
This position plays a vital role within the Athletics Department and reports to the Director of Athletics. The coach works closely with student-athletes, parents, and fellow coaching staff to support a strong team culture, clear communication, and a positive student experience within a school-based athletic program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and lead comprehensive practice sessions focused on advanced baseball fundamentals, position-specific drills, and complex game strategies.
- Manage all aspects of varsity games, including lineup cards, pitching rotations, and tactical decision-making.
- Oversee field safety and maintenance, ensuring the playing surface and equipment (bats, balls, protective gear) are in safe working order.
- Communicate regularly with the Athletic Director regarding team progress, scheduling, and equipment needs.
- Maintain a detailed inventory of baseball equipment and uniforms, coordinating with the Athletic Department for seasonal needs.
- Foster strong relationships with parents through clear and timely communication regarding schedules, expectations, and student progress.
- Coordinate transportation logistics for away matches by driving school vehicles to transport the team.
- Promote a culture of "Panther Pride" by encouraging high standards of sportsmanship and academic balance for all players.
- Attend required athletic department meetings, school open house events, and professional development sessions.
Qualifications
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
- 3+ years of experience coaching baseball, ideally at the high school varsity or collegiate level.
- Proven experience working with and mentoring developmental athletes to improve their foundational skills.
- Deep knowledge of NFHS baseball rules, scouting, and advanced statistical analysis.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate young athletes.
- Ability to work flexible afternoon hours, including evenings for matches.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before the season starts).
- Because driving school passenger vehicles is a core function of this role, candidates must meet strict institutional insurance standards:
- License Requirement: Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License (Class C) with an insurable, clean driving history
Desired Skills:
- NFHS or USA Baseball coaching certification is highly preferred.
- Experience with recruiting processes and preparing athletes for collegiate programs.
- Experience working in an independent school environment.
- Strong organizational skills for managing rosters and match reporting.
- A commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment for athletes of all backgrounds.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $5,000–$6,000 per interscholastic season. The baseball season takes place during the spring semester from February through May.
Placement within the salary range will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Candidates with fewer years of experience can expect placement toward the lower end of the range.
