Ball Field Project

As approved in our 1998 Master Plan, San Domenico School will soon begin updating our existing softball field, to retrofit as a mixed-use field for our soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and softball teams. We are excited to move forward with this long-anticipated update that we expect to be completed with as little disruption to the Sleepy Hollow community as possible.

Project Description

  • What is now a softball/baseball practice field will be updated to serve as a multi-use turf field for our soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and softball teams to host practices and games on campus.
  • Existing water-intensive grass will be replaced by state-of-the-art artificial turf and an environmentally conscious drainage system.
  • The design includes no lighting, no PA system, and no permanent seating structures.
  • Existing trees and fencing will remain as visual barriers between the field and our neighbors, along with a netting system to keep balls from exiting the field.
  • There will be no impact on our compliance with the San Domenico School Master Plan or Traffic Management Plan. These teams currently commute down Butterfield Road after school, in order to play off site before returning to campus for pickup. The need for these daily round trips will be removed when these teams can play on campus.

The field location (the current softball practice field near our student parking lot) is preferred by the County for its many advantages:

  • Preserves the “curb appeal” at the front of campus by keeping the existing tree grove intact, with minimal impact on the area surrounding the remains of the Hotaling Mansion foundation, sometimes referred to as "the ruins."
  • Maximizes the distance between the field and neighboring homes, reducing sound and visual impact.
  • Limited amount of earthwork and dirt removal is required.

Attached is a rendering of the field update project, to help visualize its location and scope. We are confident this project will have limited effect on our neighborhood, and we will do everything in our power to minimize any inconvenience it may cause. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
