6,500 HOURS COLLECTIVE SERVICE LEARNING

6,500 HOURS COLLECTIVE SERVICE LEARNING

K-12, students at SD are engaged in service in our local communities and around the world. From the Eighth Grade Capstone Projects to the senior Real Opportunities in Service Learning (ROSE) Projects, service is an SD core value and an integral part of a San Domenico education.

Cecily StockWelcome from Head of School

On behalf of our entire San Domenico community, I invite you to discover the many ways in which SD is distinctive among independent schools in the Bay Area. Founded in 1850 by the Dominican Sisters, San Domenico holds the unique distinction of being certified as California's oldest independent school.

San Domenico's mission includes a commitment to respond to the needs of the times and during this truly uncharted time,  that means empathetic, creative, and inspired teaching and learning, alongside the stability of our 170 year legacy. With this, and after extensive scenario planning, our reopening plan, Back to School 2020: Stronger Together, meant San Domenico was one of the first schools to be granted permission to return to on-campus learning. We have been through pandemics before and we know that together, we can come through this time stronger than ever.

Anchored by our heritage and four core values of study, reflection, community, and service, at SD, we encourage our students to not just study, but also to reflect on their learning, find their purpose, and celebrate in community because an exceptional education, where values and academics join together, creates more than just great students - it develops great people. We call this The SD Difference.

Our expansive 515-acre campus, now including outdoor classrooms, serves a truly global student community. As Marin County’s only K-12 school and with both boarding and day options in the high school, our unique program attracts students from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and more than 16 countries around the world.

SD's faculty members are leaders in best practice teaching and experts in social/emotional learning. Today, we could not be more proud of the way in which they have stepped up to continue teaching in our HyFlex model, toggling between distance learning and on-campus learning so that all 680 SD students continue to have access to our exceptional program. Even during a pandemic, classes at SD are purpose-driven and student centered, allowing every student to develop his or her own creativity, critical thinking skills, and a love of learning.

I invite you to read our Portrait of a Graduate. SD alumni have a deep sense of self and are truly global citizens, having studied with classmates and "big brothers and sisters" from around the world.

We hope you enjoy learning more about San Domenico and invite you to come visit our campus or take a virtual tour!

All the best,

Cecily Stock '77, M.A., J.D.
