Welcome to San Domenico
+ EDUCATION ON PURPOSE
Exceptional, college preparatory education is to be expected at independent schools like San Domenico. The SD Difference has to do with finding your purpose.
On behalf of our entire SD community, I invite you to discover the many ways in which SD is distinctive among independent schools in the Bay Area. Our expansive 515-acre campus serves a truly global student community. As Marin County’s only K-12 school and with both boarding and day options in the high school, our unique program attracts students from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and more than 16 countries around the world.
San Domenico holds the distinct title of being California’s first independent school, founded in 1850 by the Dominican Sisters, whose vision set the course for our School's mission of providing inclusive and purpose-driven education; anchored by our core values of study, reflection, community, and service. Here at SD, these values come to life every day. Indeed, many of the concepts and buzzwords popular in education today have been a part of our program since the School's founding in 1850. Mindfulness. Global-interconnection. Resiliency. Collaboration. At SD, we encourage our students to not just study, but also to reflect on their learning, find their purpose, and celebrate in community because an exceptional education, where values and academics join together, creates more than just great students - it develops great people. We call this The SD Difference.
Our visionary and experienced faculty members are leaders in best practice teaching and experts in social/emotional learning. They are passionate about their curricular specialty areas, and above all, extraordinary role models for our students. We have been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School, and the United States Department of Education honored San Domenico with a 2013 Green Ribbon Award for Excellence in Sustainability - one of only two schools in California to receive this distinction at the time.
SD's dedicated faculty and staff support our students as they explore their own values and develop character and integrity along with a commitment to social justice, service, and the principles of sustainability. Classes at SD are purpose-driven and student centered, allowing every student to develop his or her own creativity, critical thinking skills, and a love of learning.
Our 515-acre campus boasts a one-acre organic garden, one of the largest school solar fields in Marin County, an extensive music conservatory and performing arts facility, equestrian center, athletic center, six tennis courts, playing fields, and a swimming pool, all of which provide students at all levels opportunities to develop their gifts and explore their interests and passions outside of the classroom.
When students graduate from San Domenico, they have a deep sense of self, a compassionate respect for others, a responsibility to the world, and the ability to continue to pursue an abundance of opportunities.
We hope you enjoy learning more about San Domenico and invite you to come visit our campus.
All the best,
Cecily Stock, M.A., J.D. ('77)
