Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking with Emile Mulholland

Coaching several local middle school mountain bike clubs, Emile appreciates the great terrain that each of his clubs gets to ride. However, while we are riding, he is constantly thinking to himself, “If they like the trail we are on now, I bet they’d love this other trail that I know.” Usually that other trail is too far from school to ride during mountain bike club. This summer, he will take a van and drive to his favorite places to ride in the Bay Area.

Sessions Schedule

Session 1

Monday - Friday | June 19 - 23, 2017 | 9:30 am - 4:30 pm | Grades 7 - 11
(Thursdays end at approximately 9:00PM so we can travel to other locations outside of the Bay Area)

Flow: On our first week we will focus on “flow”. We will ride flow trails and trails with flow. In addition to riding our local flow trail in Tamorancho and practicing technique on the San Domenico pump track, we will ride in Santa Cruz and the South Bay.

Session 2

Monday - Friday | June 26 - 30, 2017 | 9:30 am - 4:30 pm | Grades 7 - 11
(Thursdays end at approximately 9:00PM so we can travel to other locations outside of the Bay Area)

Race Prep One: One of our more demanding weeks, this camp will focus on helping riders become better cross country racers. We will work on race techniques and race strategy, learn some basics about proper training and push ourselves to complete some of the Bay Area’s more epic rides.

Session 3

Monday - Friday | July 10 - 14, 2017 | 9:30 am - 4:30 pm | Grades 7 - 11
(Thursdays end at approximately 9:00PM so we can travel to other locations outside of the Bay Area)

Classic Mountain Biking Fun and Basic Bike Care: This week we will focus on having fun. Our rides will be designed to challenge but not overwhelm our campers, and at the end of most days we will have lessons that will teach campers how to take care of their bikes. Our Thursday trip will be to Santa Cruz -- and will hopefully include a tour of Ibis Cycles!

Instructor

Emile Mulholland

Emile became a mountain biker at a young age when his dad installed a baby seat on to his bike and began taking Emile up to Lake Lagunitas to catch newts. Emile went on to become a serious cross country mountain bike racer, briefly making it in to the professional level. He started coaching mountain biking in 2002 and has now coached with Drake, Marin Academy, Lagunitas, San Domenico, Mill Valley Middle School, as well as a club for kids from Hall Middle School hosted by Larkspur Rec. He has coached teams to league podiums and victories and has coached individuals to the state championships. At the first NICA race of the 2017 season, four of the top six D1 freshman boy finishers had ridden in one of Emile's clubs.

Coaching gives Emile an opportunity to help young people challenge themselves, overcome obstacles and build their self-confidence. Emile is equally as excited about helping kids make it safely through challenging rocky trail sections as he is about helping them create and achieve their competitive goals.
