Panther Basketball finishes 2nd in League with NCS Bid
San Domenico’s high school varsity basketball team, coached by Mike Fulton, won more games this season (21) than the last four years combined! Their 12-2 record was good for second-place in the Bay Counties' Central League, the school's best showing in nearly a decade. In the BCL Central playoffs, they nearly defeated league champion Bay School, losing by only four points, 54-50, after being down by double-digits earlier in the game. Capping-off this remarkable season was the team's invitation ---the first ever for basketball in the school's history---to the North Coast Section tournament, which is a preliminary qualifier to the state championships.

2009 FALL SPORTS Wrapup:
10/22/09:
Volleyball: The varsity has lost three consecutive matches to put their play-off hopes in jeopardy. Last night against Bay School, the girls were competitive in games two (20-25 loss) and three (25-23 win), but could not sustain their momentum in game four, falling to the Breakers, 12-25. Nicole Frias had seven kills and six blocks, Tina Meyers added six kills and three aces, and Kali Collymore had eight assists. San Domenico will need to win one of their two remaining matches, both against first-place San Francisco Waldorf, to capture the final play-off spot.
Tennis: Senior Liz Ryan remains undefeated in league play at third singles with a 6-0 record. Her most recent victory came in San Domenico's 4-1 loss to Drew Prep of San Francisco last Friday. Next week the Panthers compete in the BCL West individual and team championships.
09/11/09:
Volleyball opened with an exciting 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-16, 26-24) victory over International of San Francisco. It was San Domenico's first win over the Jaguars in volleyball in four years. In their second league match against Pescadero, the Panthers dropped a 3-2 decision. After losing the first two games by scores of 23-25 and 19-25, San Domenico stormed back in games three (25-24) and four (25-16) before succumbing in the fifth and decisive game, 15-4. New head coach Jesse Denham likes the chances of his young team (no seniors, only one junior) to reach the playoffs in the Bay Counties Central League. Leading this year's core of talented sophomores is middle-hitter Nicole Frias, who is one of the top club players in her age-group in Marin County. Opposite Nicole is 5'10" middle-hitter Christina Meyers, an all-league basketball player as a freshman last year, who is still learning the game of volleyball. Both Meyers and Frias give the Panthers a powerful hitting and blocking tandem and have combined to lead the Panthers in kills thus far. Feeding this dynamic duo are setters Nicole Garcia, a freshman, who gained valuable experience playing club for Coach Denham last spring, and sophomore Kali Colymore, a returning varsity player. The varsity is also receiving strong contributions from three members who played on last year's successful JV team: sophomore outside-hitter Cynthia Leon, opposite Ebere Emenike, and defensive specialist Ja Limjantra. Rounding out the starting six is freshman Sasha Nagler, an outside hitter, who has probably been the team's best passer and server in the early going.
San Domenico's main competition for one of the four play-off spots will likely come from aforementioned International and Pescadero, as well as San Francisco Waldorf and The Bay School. Upcoming varsity home matches will be on 9/29, 10/16, 10/20, and 10/30.
The tennis and cross country teams also have new head coaches: Jeff Thomas for tennis and Emily Leary for cross country. Jeff, a teaching professional, runs the tennis program for all grade levels at San Domenico, and Emily is a teacher in the foundations program at the high school. Tennis returns to varsity competition after two years as a successful JV program. The Panthers will have excellent senior leadership in singles' players McKenzie Flanagan, Caroline Ackley, and Liz Ryan, and doubles' players, Kiki and Susan Page, and Vicki Qian. Flanagan will be one of the top competitors in Bay Counties League West competition. Coach Thomas also expects strong contributions from sophomores Rita Hu, Ali LaRoy, and junior Marea Otter. Upcoming home matches are scheduled for 9/29 vs. Convent, 10/1 vs. Urban, and 10/6 vs. International. Cross country had a good turn-out of runners with four freshmen, two sophomores, six juniors, and one senior. Juniors Abby Costello, Ashley Kim, Marea Otter (who is doing double-duty with the tennis team), and senior Jordan Jordan are returners from last year's team. Coach Leary sees a lot of upside in sophomore transfer Brett Simpson. Most of the Panthers' meets will take in San Francisco in Golden Gate Park (9/29, 10/6, 10/21, 11/6), but their lone Marin race will be at Tennessee Valley in Mill Valley on 10/28.
