Keynote Speaker: San Domenico welcomes back, Lauren Wylie, SD Alum, for an exciting presentation on her remarkable journey to Antarctica that inspired her to take action to raise awareness of the urgent need to promote sustainability. Lauren’s 2-week Inspire Antarctica expedition gathered 70 people from all over the world from 25 different countries – made up of scientists, journalists, students, teachers, athletes, entrepreneurs, artists and corporate leaders. The focus of the expedition was the launch of the 2041 organization’s “E-base”. Developed by Robert Swan, the first man to walk to both the North and South poles, the E-base would be Antarctica’s first education station, aimed at teaching the world about energy conservation, sustainability and the need to preserve the continent of Antarctica. Personal Ecology
Facilitator: Trathen Heckman, Founder: Daily Acts and Green SanghaWhy not have a well lived, well loved, well designed life with your mind, body and emotions consistently in service to the ideals you hold most dear? It is time to radically elevate our personal and planetary evolution by shifting our consciousness and healing our ecosystems. The unprecedented calamities we face are an opportunity to get clear and empowered to bring our visions to fruition. In this workshop, you’ll be developing an inner compass to find and serve your unique purpose and thrive through sacred, balanced service to your life and world. We’ll develop or refine spiritual practices and practical tools rooted in the principles of Permaculture, habits of effectiveness and your most vital insights and experiences.
Sustainable Gardening
Facilitator: Shelley Flint, SD’s Director of Sustainability Are you interested in learning how to start your own school/community garden, maximize the use of space in an already existing garden, and access the tools for a sustained and bountiful relationship to the land? If so, please join us for some hands on fun in San Domenico’s Garden of Hope.
Garbage to Gold – Composting
Facilitator: Vernon Huffman, Triple C Ranch ManagerLearn about how San Domenico is turning garbage to gold. Help San Domenico kick-off its latest project to prepare a site for a large scale horse manure composting system. Composting the stables horse manure will help reduce 1,200 cubic yards of animal waste each year and save thousands of dollars on disposal costs for the school. In addition to these savings, the end product will help to nourish the plants in the school garden and campus landscape.
You Are What you Eat!
Facilitator: Frances Holmes, Health and Nutrition CoachGet educated on healthy dietary choices from a whole foods approach. Understand the connection between your nutrition, your environment and how both of these are so important to your overall health and well being. We will have hands on demo creating an easy and tasty roll that you can enjoy as an appetizer, use as a side dish or have a great energizing snack.
Our Liquid Earth
Facilitator: Lisa MerrickOceans make up three-quarters of planet earth and though we rarely see much below the surface of this watery world, it offers many functions that sustain us. Come explore some of the beauty, ecosystems, issues, and conservation efforts occurring in Hawaii and California with a marine scientist.
What is Your Carbon Footprint?
Facilitator: UC Berkeley students Chris Jones & Mia YamauchiEver wonder how much “nature” your lifestyle requires? Learn how to measure you own impact on the environment and hear about the exciting and innovative work The Berkeley Institute of the Environment is doing in helping to solve the global climate crisis.
Students Leading the Way to Sustainability (Panel Discussion)
Facilitator: Trathen Heckman – Founder of Daily ActsIn this session, you will hear from students who have created and implemented sustainability projects in their schools. We’ll then have time for open discussion. Representatives include students from San Domenico, Marin Academy, Redwood High School, and The Branson School.
Eco-fabulous Clothing: Recycle that T-shirt!
Facilitator: Shelagh SmithIt seems we get T-shirts from places we’ve visited, activities we’ve participated in, and organizations we join. Pretty soon we have more than we need. What to do with those under used T-shirts? Recycle them - turn them into something new! Learn how to change your shirts into a new style, or even into an iPod case or other sewn creation in just a few steps. Get your creativity flowing! BYOT (bring your own t-shirt).
Eco-cuisine
Facilitator: Annika OsbornBe a Locavore for the day! Join us in the Garden of Hope where together we will harvest GMO-free fruits and vegetables and show you how to prepare a few easy recipes. And most importantly, we will have a “food tasting” where you will taste test the recipes and judge how slow food stacks up against fast food. And if you don’t know what Locavore, GMO, or slow food is, we will tell you in this workshop.
Clothing Exchange

Environmental Film: Fresh (2009, 70 min., USA)San Domenico hosts a special screening of
Fresh. More than a film,
Fresh is a reflection of a rising movement of people and communities across America who are re-inventing our food system.
Fresh celebrates the food architects who offer a practical vision of a new food paradigm and consumer access to it. Encouraging individuals to take matters into their own hands,
Fresh is a guide that empowers people to take an array of actions as energetic as planting urban gardens and creating warm composts from food waste, and as simple as buying locally-grown products and preserving seasonal produce to eat later in the year.
Serve & Learn
Facilitator: Kristen LevineAll freshman and sophomores will attend- to get inspiration and ideas for your future! Check out the service projects that juniors and seniors have participated in this year. Learn new things while you support your fellow students while they present their ROSE projects
