Sustainable San Domenico

Never before has the ethic of environmental stewardship been as critical as it is now and San Domenico is very proud of its distinctive program of ecological literacy and environmental science -- the first in Marin County -- which permeates curriculum across all grade levels, the food service program, and overall ecological footprint of the school’s operations.

San Domenico is a founding member of the Marin Green Schools Alliance, which began in the summer of 2007 when representatives from SD, Cascade Canyon School, Marin Academy, and Marin Country Day School came together to share ideas about sustainability in their schools. About a dozen schools are involved so far, including public schools from Novato (a city in northern Marin County) and the Marin County Office of Public Education.

Our one-acre organic “Garden of Hope” is cultivated as a learning place for students at all age groups and across all disciplines. It is our goal to engage students in the garden to learn classroom concepts in a real life setting and to instill a sense of responsibility and respect for all of life while developing outreach programs that highlight the garden as a learning center and model of sustainability for local community members and other schools.
