Common Names: Pacific boa
The pacific boa is one of only two ground snakes that inhabit New Caledonia (the majority are the incredibly venomous sea snakes). It can reach up to seven feet in length, and is about a foot in length at birth. The boa appears deadly because of its triangular shape head and upturned snout, but in reality it is much like other boas and uses constriction to kill its prey. Its coloration varies from shades of brown and beige covered by patters of diamonds and spots, though some are found with vibrant red and yellow coloring directly after shedding their skin. They are able to survive in both the grassland areas of New Caledonia, and within the rainforest. These boas are fairly common in New Caledonia, because they are not normally exported from the country and are rather good at camouflage as their skin looks incredibly like bark. They tend to live within the branches of trees or in the protection of large bushes and shrubs.
