Lower School students have been very busy with their service learning projects. Here is a brief recap from our Lower and Middle School Service Learning Coordinator Gail McCallister.
Aldersly Retirement Home
K visited Aldersly Retirement home three times to read, sing and bring joy to the elderly residents.
Jessica's Haven & Rescue
K visited Jessica's Haven & Rescue to read to and cuddle small rescue dogs.
Yesterday, we went to Lourdes, the retirement facility for the Dominican Sisters, many of whom have been teachers or administrators at SD. Each 1st Grader had a "Special Sister" to whom they wrote a sweet letter and with whom they shared a root beer float. View more photos here.
St. Matia Sock Drive & Shoe Fundraiser
After meeting Sister Christine from the St. Matia School in Uganda when she came to visit, our 2nd Graders wanted to do something to help the children there. It was their idea to implement a sock drive and fundraiser for shoes for the children. Sister Carla, who travels to the school every summer, will be bringing the donations the children collect in the coming weeks.
2nd & 3rd Grade
Cedars of Marin
Later this month the 2nd and 3rd Graders will be visiting a day program for special needs individuals in San Anselmo. At the site, Cedars Textile Collaborative, the students will get to see all the activities the program participants enjoy - working in an organic garden, caring for farm animals, weaving beautiful textiles on hand looms and more.
Homeward Bound Family Center
The students visited the Homeward Bound Family Center, a residential facility for homeless families, and made lasagnas for the people living there.
Jessica's Haven & Rescue Donation
Through their Business Day fundraiser, the 4th Graders raise $1200 for Jessica's Haven & Rescue, a small dog rescue and program for special needs individuals.
Each 5th Grade Leadership Team took a turn bringing breakfast, sorting food donations, and playing bingo with the elderly residents at Fireside, a low income housing facility.
Family Center Donation
Through their Breakfast With Santa fundraiser, the 5th Graders raised $2,500 for much needed maintenance for the Homeward Bound Family Center. Some of that money has been spent to buy supplies for the 5th Graders to create child friendly artwork for the bare walls of the Family Center.
